Introduction

It’s 2009 and it’s now the end of TM’s last mile monopoly and lack of competition! We have now DiGi Broadband, Maxis Broadband, P1 WiMax, and Celcom Broadband. So, the competition is quite tough huh?

Nowadays, Broadband services is blooming in Malaysia and there’s no doubt that Malaysian have various choices of broadband packages.

Comparison:

Speed Terms

Everyone loves Speeding! Even on Internet. So, brace yourself with the “Need of Speed”.

ISP Downlink Uplink
DiGi 3.6Mbps 384kbps
DiGi PROMO 7.2Mbps 2.0Mbps
Maxis Starter 384Kbps 128Kbps
Maxis Advanced 640Kbps 128Kbps
Maxis Power 3.6Mbps 384Kbps
Celcom 3.6Mbps 384kbps
Celcom Unlimited 3.6Mbps 384kbps
P1 Lite 400Kbps 150Kbps
P1 Plus 1.2Mbps 500Kbps
P1 Pro 2.4Mbps 500Kbps
Streamyx 384 384Kbps 128Kbps
Streamyx 512 512Kbps 256Kbps
Streamyx 1M 1.0Mbps 384Kbps
Streamyx 2M 2.0Mbps 384Kbps
Streamyx 4M 4.0Mbps 512Kbps

There’s no doubt that DiGi’s PROMO plan is the sole winner in this competition.

DiGi – 1 , Maxis – 0 , Celcom – 0 , P1 WiMax – 0 , Streamyx – 0

Price

Money is not everything but it’s at least something. So, poor people like me could enjoy broadband. Isn’t that a mission by the government to provide affordable broadband? So, check it out.

ISP Price
DiGi RM158
DiGi PROMO RM128
Maxis Starter RM68
Maxis Advanced RM78
Maxis Power RM138
Celcom RM139
Celcom Unlimited RM299
P1 Lite RM49
P1 Plus RM99
P1 Pro RM199
Streamyx 384 RM20*
Streamyx 512 RM66
Streamyx 1M RM88
Streamyx 2M RM188
Streamyx 4M RM268

Well, it seems like P1 outweighs other ISP by providing the cheapest price. As for RM20 by Streamyx, due to the additional fee for exceeding their quota of 10 hours, it’s a big no no for basic broadband user.

DiGi – 1 , Maxis – 0 , Celcom – 0 , P1 WiMax – 1 , Streamyx – 0

Quota

Speeding has it’s consequences. You might get a ticket by a traffic police. So does broadband. You might get your speed throttled or stopped by police when you speed to fast. We now view the quota for each ISP.

ISP Quota
DiGi 50GB
DiGi PROMO 50GB
Maxis Starter 3GB
Maxis Advanced 3GB
Maxis Power 3GB
Celcom 5GB
Celcom Unlimited Unlimited
P1 Lite 5GB
P1 Plus 20GB
P1 Pro 40GB
Streamyx 384 10 Hours
Streamyx 512 Unlimited*
Streamyx 1M Unlimited*
Streamyx 2M Unlimited*
Streamyx 4M Unlimited*

It seems like Maxis is on a real losing side here. God knows that 3GB is never enough for a basic broadband user in Malaysia. However, P1 shares the same fate as well. Limiting 5GB doesn’t help either. It’s best that P1 would upgrade it to 8GB, which is normal usage for a basic user. As for Streamyx and Celcom, unlimited shows that you’re overselling. This is just the same like Web hosting. Providing Unlimited package truly states that you’re overselling and overselling is a real bad bad idea. There’s no such thing as unlimited. So, I would let DiGi, with quota of 50GB to score.

DiGi – 2 , Maxis – 0 , Celcom – 0 , P1 WiMax – 1 , Streamyx – 0

Customer Service

Response Time

Well, here is the part where ISP could score the most points. First, we look at the response time. Points will be given as follow: 3 – Fast, 2 – Moderate, 1 – Slow.

I would give DiGi and P1 3 points as their response time is fast. Maxis and Celcom scored 2 points. Well, we know that we need to wait for a long time to get a response from Streamyx, I would give them 1 point.

Professionalism

How much do their customer service knows their product? I would say that P1 knows their product best! So P1, it’s a 3 points for you. As for the other ISP, they will receive 2 points except Streamyx with 1 point.

Current Score:

DiGi – 7 , Maxis – 4 , Celcom – 4 , P1 WiMax – 7 , Streamyx – 2

Conclusion: Good job DiGi and P1. You will make a change in broadband in Malaysia. You truly uphold your slogan ” Rediscover what Broadband should be” and ” Beyond Broadband”. As for the other ISP, I hope that you will brush up your services to compete against each other.

Last Comment: I hope I would have a free broadband account so that I could evaluate on every aspects of the broadband services. In the end, I would write a full review about the broadband provided.
